Putin, Trump hold phone talks, discuss fight against terrorism

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON, May 3 (PRIME) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed prospects of coordination in fight against terrorism in Syria and the situation on the Korean Peninsula during a phone conversation late Tuesday, the Kremlin’s press service said.

“On May 2, a telephone call between Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump took place. A range of crucial issues of cooperation between the countries in the international arena was discussed. Special attention was paid to the prospect of coordination of Russian and U.S. efforts in the fight against international terrorism within a context of the Syrian crisis,” the Kremlin said.

The leaders have agreed to intensify talks between heads of foreign ministries to search ways to make a ceasefire regime sustainable.

“The goal is to create the basis for real process of reconciliation in Syria,” the Kremlin said.

Putin and Trump agreed to continue contacts over the phone and also spoke in favor of organizing a personal meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg in July.

The White House said that Putin and Trump had agreed that all parties should do everything possible to end the violence in Syria and discussed establishing de-escalation zones in Syria. The leaders have also discussed fight against terrorism in the Middle East.
